Arizona Board of Regents Extends Contract for Coach Tommy Lloyd

The University of Arizona recently celebrated a milestone, with the Arizona Board of Regents approving a significant contract extension for its men’s basketball coach, Tommy Lloyd. This decision follows an unprecedented season for the Wildcats, marking a new chapter in the program’s storied history.

Arizona Basketball’s Continued Success

The board meeting, held at the Paul & Alice Baker Center for Public Media, emphasized the university’s commitment to excellence across various domains, including athletics. “Coach Lloyd has been an invaluable leader who has built one of the best teams in the nation,” stated President Suresh Garimella. “It is clear that Arizona Basketball is very meaningful to the communities we serve. Under Coach Lloyd’s leadership, our Wildcat student-athletes have represented not just the U of A, but our entire state, on the national stage, inspiring all of us with heart and determination. We’re pleased ABOR has approved his contract extension.”

Since his tenure began in 2021, Coach Lloyd has led the Wildcats to remarkable achievements: three conference regular-season titles, victories in three conference championships, and four Sweet 16 appearances in five seasons. His record of 148-35 is unmatched in NCAA history for a coach’s first five years. In 2025-26, Lloyd was honored as the Naismith College Coach of the Year after guiding the team to its first Final Four in over two decades, clinching the Big 12 regular season and tournament championships, and achieving an overall 36-3 record.

The contract extension ensures Lloyd’s leadership continues through the 2031 season. The team’s success was further recognized by the state when Governor Katie Hobbs and the Arizona legislature declared April 9 as “Arizona Wildcats Day.”

Academic and Security Initiatives

Beyond athletics, the regents approved two new academic programs aimed at expanding the university’s educational reach and responding to national security needs. The University of Arizona Kyl Institute for National Security is spearheading a project to enhance Fort Huachuca’s readiness for modern threats through a realistic, simulation-driven testing environment called an “EMS Berm.” This project, supported by a $300,000 grant from the Board of Regents, will bolster intelligence and cyber warfare training.

Complementing this effort, a new Department of Intelligence Operations will be established within the College of Engineering, offering undergraduate and certificate programs. Additionally, The Center for One Health Innovation and Practice will launch within the Mel & Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health. This center will focus on the intersection of human, animal, and environmental health, promoting interdisciplinary research and providing experiential learning opportunities.
