Philadelphia’s Free Library System Now Open on Saturdays Citywide
In a significant move to enhance community access, all branches of the Free Library of Philadelphia are now operating on Saturdays, effective April 18, 2026. This development marks a substantial expansion of the library’s six-day service schedule.
The inclusion of Saturday hours across all neighborhood libraries underscores the Free Library’s dedication to broadening access to essential resources. This initiative is designed to offer greater flexibility to a diverse group of patrons, including families, students, job seekers, and lifelong learners.
The Free Library of Philadelphia aims to be a place where joy is found, where opportunity meets access for everyone in the city, regardless of their background, age, or place of residence. It supports communities by providing free resources, engaging programs, and inviting spaces that foster connection and inclusivity for all visitors.
Since the onset of the pandemic, the Free Library has been gradually restoring Saturday services. This has been made possible through increased funding from the City of Philadelphia, which has enabled the library system to enhance staffing, maintain consistent hours, and offer more dependable services. With the recent budget expansion, the library has successfully hired over 300 additional staff members and invested in facility improvements, reaching a significant milestone in service restoration.
Residents are encouraged to visit their local neighborhood libraries this Saturday, explore the collection, and engage with the wide array of services available. Discover what your local library can offer!
