Potential Hospital Merger Raises Concerns Over Consumer Impact
In Raleigh, North Carolina, a newly unveiled agenda item from the Wake County Commission has brought to light plans for a merger between Atrium Health and WakeMed. This development has already sparked reactions from state officials, with Treasurer Brad Briner issuing a statement highlighting potential consumer impact concerns.
Briner emphasized, “There is a simple business principle that when suppliers consolidate and competition is reduced it is the consumers who suffer.” He pointed out that the healthcare sector has repeatedly demonstrated this principle, with consolidated entities leading to rising costs and increased patient debt.
In light of these concerns, Briner expressed his anticipation for thorough evaluations by the Attorney General and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). He noted the need for careful scrutiny to assess the merger’s implications for state residents. Reflecting on similar past events, he remarked, “If history is any guide, this merger will not benefit the public.”
