Campaign Promotes Safety on U.S. 129’s ‘Tail of the Dragon’ Drive

Heightened Safety Measures Implemented on U.S. 129’s “Tail of the Dragon”

RALEIGH – Motorists navigating the picturesque yet challenging 11-mile stretch of U.S. 129, popularly known as the “Tail of the Dragon,” are being urged by officials from North Carolina and Tennessee to exercise caution. The winding route, famed among motorcycle and sports car aficionados, demands heightened safety awareness.

In a concerted effort to promote safe travel, the N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program, N.C. State Highway Patrol, Tennessee Highway Patrol, and various local agencies have initiated a campaign. This initiative focuses on education and increased law enforcement presence to ensure the safety of all travelers along this renowned scenic road.

Law enforcement agencies in Swain and Graham counties are actively participating in checkpoints and saturation patrols. Simultaneously, Tennessee state troopers are stepping up patrols across the state border. Motorists should anticipate intensified law enforcement activities through the conclusion of this week.

“The goal of this campaign is to ensure the safety of all motorcyclists, drivers and passengers traveling the Tail of the Dragon,” emphasized NCGHSP Director Mark Ezzell. He further noted, “Travelers should know that this 11-mile roadway is not for sightseeing; the attraction is the tightly winding road itself. Ensuring that drivers are buckled and maintain safe speeds, without distractions, is our No. 1 priority.”

The campaign’s launch event featured participation from the Swain County Sheriff’s Office, N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, and Western N.C. DWI Task Force.

Lt. Rusty Smith of the Tennessee Highway Patrol highlighted their focus on identifying unsafe driving behaviors. “Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers are watching for unsafe driving behaviors such as distracted driving, speeding, impaired driving, and unrestrained passengers,” he stated. Smith added, “Through voluntary compliance from the motoring public, enforcement and education, the ‘Tail of the Dragon’ can be a safe, scenic and exciting drive for everyone.”

This safety campaign is part of the broader Vision Zero initiative, which aims to eliminate traffic-related fatalities by transforming the traffic safety culture.
