I-40 East Closure in Forsyth County for Winston-Salem Beltway Project

Temporary Closure Scheduled for I-40 East in Forsyth County

WINSTON SALEM – Commuters in Forsyth County should prepare for a temporary disruption as part of the ongoing Winston-Salem Northern Beltway project. The N.C. Department of Transportation has announced a planned closure of Interstate 40 East.

Weather conditions permitting, the closure will commence at the stroke of midnight on Sunday, July 14. The section of I-40 East between Exit 196 (I-74 / U.S. 311) and Exit 201 (Union Cross Road) will be inaccessible. To navigate around the closure, drivers will be directed to exit onto I-74 / U.S. 311 and continue to Union Cross Road (Exit 59). At that point, they should make a left onto Union Cross Road to reach the I-40 interchange and resume their eastbound journey on I-40.

The right lane of I-40 East will welcome traffic once more at 5 a.m. Following the completion of the work, the left lane will also be reopened. The entire stretch of I-40 East is expected to be fully operational by 5:00 a.m. on Monday, July 15.

To circumvent potential delays, drivers are advised to consider using U.S. 421 (Salem Parkway) as an alternative route. It is crucial for motorists to stay vigilant and prepare for possible delays while adjusting to detours and altered traffic patterns.
