Supreme Court Upholds Nevada’s Ballot Counting Grace Period
The U.S. Supreme Court has dismissed a challenge by the Republican National Committee regarding Nevada’s ballot counting rules, marking a significant win for voters across the state. This decision upholds the grace period allowing ballots postmarked by Election Day to be counted if received shortly thereafter, a practice that is particularly favored by voters in Nevada’s rural areas.
Nevada State Democratic Party Chair Daniele Monroe-Moreno expressed satisfaction with the ruling, stating, “Today’s Supreme Court decision in Watson v. RNC—a rejection of Republicans’ latest attempt to disenfranchise eligible voters—is a victory for democracy and Nevada voters seeking to have their voices heard at the ballot box.”
The decision is seen as a testament to the efforts of Attorney General Aaron Ford and Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar. Both officials have been prominent advocates for maintaining the integrity of Nevada’s elections and ensuring equal voting rights for all eligible residents. Their efforts have been pivotal in countering attempts to limit ballot access and combat the spread of misinformation.
Monroe-Moreno emphasized the importance of this ruling for voters, saying, “Every eligible voter deserves the opportunity to cast a ballot safely, securely, and with confidence that it will be counted according to the law. NV Dems will continue standing up for the fundamental right to vote and opposing GOP efforts to make it harder for eligible Americans to participate in our elections.”
