Wildlife Management Efforts Conclude in Nevada: BLM’s Successful Wild Horse and Burro Gather
PAHRUMP, Nev. – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has successfully wrapped up its 2026 Spring Mountains Complex wild horse and burro roundup near Pahrump, Nevada, as of June 19, 2026. In an effort to address overpopulation, the BLM removed 97 excess wild horses and 425 excess burros from the public lands.
This initiative aimed to tackle the challenges of overpopulation of wild horses and burros both within and beyond the designated area. With limited water resources available to sustain the current animal population, the BLM’s actions were designed to prevent further land degradation, minimize vehicle collisions on nearby highways, and restore a balanced ecological environment on public lands.
The gather was executed following Section 1333(b) of the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act. This legislative compliance plays a crucial role in helping achieve the Standards for Rangeland Health as outlined by the Mojave-Southern Great Basin Resource Advisory Council.
Post-gather, the BLM transported the captured animals to the Palomino Valley Wild Horse and Burro Off-range Corrals located in Reno, Nevada. Here, they will be prepared for the BLM’s Adoption and Sales Program. Animals that are not adopted or sold will be placed in long-term pastures, where they will continue to receive humane care while retaining their “wild” status and protection under the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act.
