BLM Seeks Proposals for Lincoln County Archaeological Projects Round 15

ELY, Nev. — The Bureau of Land Management is now open to receiving proposals for the 15th round of the Lincoln County Archaeological Initiative (LCAI), with submissions accepted until August 14, 2026.

The LCAI is dedicated to fostering projects that focus on the inventory, evaluation, protection, and management of unique archaeological resources in Lincoln County, Nevada. To be considered, all proposed projects must be situated within Lincoln County and adhere to the guidelines specified in the Lincoln County Implementation Agreement. Details of the agreement can be accessed at https://www.blm.gov/LCAI.

“From outreach to rock art conservation to cutting-edge scientific studies of ancient lakebeds, projects funded under this initiative are incredibly valuable for the public and for the BLM in managing fragile cultural resources in Lincoln County,” stated Melanie Peterson, BLM Ely District special legislation program manager.

The BLM is actively seeking project proposals, which are supported through funds generated by the sale of BLM-administered public lands marked for disposal according to the Lincoln County Land Act and existing land-use plans. The Act has created a special account where 85 percent of all land sale revenues are deposited, utilized for various purposes including archaeological research in Lincoln County. The distribution of the remaining funds assigns 5 percent to the State of Nevada and 10 percent to Lincoln County.

To date, the BLM has allocated over $12 million for archaeological endeavors within Lincoln County. The funded projects span a wide range, including Paiute and Shoshone ethnographic and archaeological research, archaeological site inventories, rock art studies, ethnobotanical and toolstone research, settlement pattern studies, educational brochures, school curriculum development, and enhancements to archaeological collections from public lands in the county.
