WASHINGTON – In a significant move for land management and community development, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) recently completed the sale of 13 public parcels, covering a total of 108 acres in the Las Vegas Valley. This competitive online sale, under the framework of the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act, generated an impressive $68,654,000.
BLM Acting Director Bill Groffy emphasized the dual benefits of the sale, stating, “This successful land sale underscores the BLM’s commitment to responsible stewardship of public lands and supporting local communities, including helping to ease housing pressures in the Las Vegas Valley.” He highlighted that the proceeds exceeded the fair market value by nearly $16 million, allowing for reinvestment into community-enhancing projects like parks and trails, thereby improving the quality of life for Nevada residents.
The Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act permits the BLM to sell lands within a designated boundary in the Las Vegas Valley. According to the act, 85% of the generated funds are earmarked for various Nevada-wide projects. These include the development of parks, trails, and natural areas, as well as capital improvements on federal lands, acquisition of environmentally sensitive land, and initiatives for hazardous fuels reduction and landscape restoration. Additionally, the state of Nevada benefits from 5% of the revenue, which is allocated to education, while 10% is directed to the Southern Nevada Water Authority.
