The University of Arizona is once again opening its doors to the local community with a unique opportunity to shop sustainably at its dorm move-out rummage sale. This event, which has not been held since 2018, promises to offer a wide variety of items left behind by students, all available at bargain prices.
The event spans two weekends, May 16-17 and May 23-24, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at ACE Recycling, located at 9110 S. Eisenhower Road. The first day of each weekend offers items at significantly reduced prices, while the second day allows shoppers to take home items for free, subject to availability. The initial weekend will showcase clothing, accessories, and small household items, whereas the following weekend will feature furniture from the university’s nearly 600 dorm rooms undergoing replacement.
Attendees are encouraged to bring their own large, sturdy bags to transport their purchases.
“This sale is the perfect opportunity for the community to not only support the university and our students but also our sustainability goals and the local environment,” stated Jill Burchell, senior coordinator for sustainability operations and initiatives with Housing & Residential Life. “You can prevent items from ending up in our landfills as junk by giving them a new life in your own home.”
The rummage sale serves a dual purpose, offering affordable goods to the community while also reinforcing the university’s commitment to sustainability. Students are educated on these principles starting from their move-in day, learning how to reuse and recycle, which continues to shape their environmental consciousness beyond their college years.
“We begin by teaching students about recycling in the fall when they move in and continue to work with them on a variety of things like energy and water reduction,” Burchell remarked. “Once they move out of the dorms and start looking at off-campus housing and paying their own bills, we want to make sure they know how to conserve.”
The move-out process, along with the collection of items, kicks off on May 6 after the last day of classes, and concludes on May 15 as dorms close for the summer term. Additionally, the Office of Government & Community Relations collaborates with nearby off-campus apartments to gather unwanted student belongings.
Funds raised from the sale will go towards the Dorm Assistance Award, a program designed to aid low-income and first-generation students by subsidizing a portion of their rent for a year. However, payments made are not eligible for tax deductions.
