Radon, a silent and invisible threat, might be lurking in your home without your knowledge. This naturally occurring radioactive gas can accumulate indoors and is recognized as the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. The only definitive method to detect its presence is through testing.
In observance of Radon Action Month, Barry-Eaton District Health Department (BEDHD) is distributing free radon test kits to residents of Barry and Eaton County during January. These kits are available on a first come, first served basis.
“Many people are surprised to learn that radon can be found in any home, no matter the age or location,” said Rebekah Condon, Health Officer. “The good news is that testing is simple, and in January it is free! This is an easy way for residents to learn more about their home and protect their health.”
Radon originates from the decay of uranium present in soil and rock. It can infiltrate homes through minor cracks and gaps in the foundation, potentially reaching harmful levels over time. Winter months provide an ideal testing period since homes are often sealed, allowing radon levels to increase. Homeowners are advised to test for radon every two years, as structural changes can create new entry points for the gas.
The radon test is straightforward and requires only a few days to complete. Should elevated levels be detected, measures can be implemented to mitigate radon and minimize health risks.
