Detroit Opens Shelter and Respite Centers Amid Cold Weather Emergency

Detroit Activates Resources for Residents as Temperatures Plummet

With the mercury set to dive into the teens and wind chills forecasted to hit single digits, Detroit is proactively opening shelters and respite centers to aid residents during the cold snap. Chief Public Health Officer Denise Fair Razo has declared a cold weather health emergency to ensure public safety.

Warmth and Shelter Initiatives

The City, in collaboration with Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries, is establishing an overnight shelter at 13130 Woodward Avenue. This facility will operate from 8 p.m. on Monday, December 29, until noon on Saturday, January 3. Residents seeking refuge can walk in directly or contact the Detroit Housing Resource HelpLine at 866-313-2520, available around the clock.

For those without shelter, assistance is accessible by visiting any police precinct after 6 p.m. or during weekends. Additionally, in-person support is available at Cass Community Social Services at select times during the week. More details can be found at camdetroit.org/.

Comprehensive Support for Housing Emergencies

Detroit’s network of over 1,700 emergency beds, alongside the Detroit Housing Resource HelpLine, stands ready to assist those in housing crises. The HelpLine is operational during business hours and extends support beyond regular hours for urgent needs. Street outreach services are available evenings and weekends to connect individuals with necessary aid.

Further resources are available for specific emergencies, such as domestic violence, through Michigan’s Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-866-864-2338, or mental health crises via the 24-hour Helpline at 1-800-241-4949.

Respite Centers Available Across the City

The City has designated certain recreation centers and library branches as warm-up locations. The Adams Butzel Complex and Coleman A. Young Recreation Center will be open on January 1 and 2 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. All Detroit Public Library branches are also options during their standard hours, though they will close on December 31 and January 1 for the holidays.

For more information about library hours, residents can visit branches such as the Main Library, Bowen Branch, and others spread across the city.
