Purposeful Play: Supporting Child Development

From 10 to 11:30 a.m., the Legacy Center Fieldhouse was buzzing with activity as children engaged in play that encouraged movement, laughter, and social connection. The event aimed to foster the development of important skills in various domains:

  • Social-emotional development

  • Resource connection

Creating a supportive environment helps children thrive by connecting families and caregivers with one another and with early childhood partners.

Gifts and Learning Materials: Enhancing Early Literacy

Each child received a complimentary book and snack, promoting early literacy and shared reading experiences at home. Additionally, the first 50 families with children aged 3–5 were given take-home STEAM kits, fostering brain-building play beyond the event.

Families also had the opportunity to complete developmental screenings through Help Me Grow Livingston, using ASQ-3 and ASQSE2 tools to better understand their child’s development and access supportive resources if needed.

Enriching Kits from Detroit PBS KIDS

Adding to the excitement, Detroit PBS KIDS provided “Read, Write, ROAR!” activity kits, which included:

  • A Sesame Street storybook
  • A small plush character
  • Stickers and activity sheets
  • Writing and drawing tools
  • A reusable pouch for continued learning

These kits aim to extend literacy and learning activities at home, making education a joyful experience for children.

The success of this playdate was the result of collaboration among various community partners in Livingston County. Such partnerships enhance the support network available to families.

A Special Offer for Attendees
