Villanova Joins Habitat for Humanity for Pope Leo Village Launch

Villanova University Collaborates with Habitat for Humanity to Launch New Housing Initiative

Villanova, Pa. (April 13, 2026)—Villanova University is set to engage with Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia on April 18 to inaugurate Pope Leo Village, a unique housing project aimed at increasing affordable home ownership in North Philadelphia. This initiative aligns with Villanova’s core mission of service and its Augustinian Catholic roots.

The initiative, Pope Leo Village, honors Pope Leo XIV, an Augustinian friar and Villanova alumnus. The official launch will occur at a home renovation site in North Philadelphia’s Brewerytown, where Villanova students will collaborate with Habitat staff and community members to support local families seeking secure and affordable housing options.

The event will feature remarks and a home blessing by University President the Rev. Peter M. Donohue, OSA, PhD. Additionally, a Villanova student volunteer will lead a dedication litany, emphasizing the initiative’s focus on faith-driven service and reflection.

“Villanova’s Augustinian Catholic tradition calls us to unite faith, learning and service in pursuit of the common good,” said Father Donohue. “Pope Leo Village gives our community the opportunity to live that mission in a tangible way—working alongside neighbors and Habitat to help build homes, dignity and hope.”

With a history of over 30 years, Villanova’s collaboration with Habitat for Humanity underlines the University’s mission to promote compassionate leadership, ethical responsibility, and community service through experiential learning.

An anonymous donor, inspired by Pope Leo XIV’s dedication to social justice, supports the Pope Leo Village initiative. This donor has partnered with Habitat for Humanity affiliates nationwide to create opportunities for families to access decent housing.

The initiative includes commitments from 20 Habitat for Humanity affiliates across the United States to construct over 235 affordable homes. In Philadelphia, efforts will concentrate on the Sharswood and Brewerytown neighborhoods in Lower North Philadelphia, aiming to deliver 26 homeownership units through substantial renovations and new multifamily construction.
