UVA Today Highlights: Renee Grutzik’s Impactful Storytelling Journey

Meet Renee Grutzik, UVA Today’s inaugural fellow, who has excelled in capturing the essence of university life through her engaging narratives. Her article titled “Telling UVA’s Stories Helped Me Find My Own” delves into her journey as a student writer and some of her notable assignments.

Grutzik’s portfolio boasts an impressive interview with Tina Fey, a UVA alumna, and a heartwarming piece on two first-year roommates from the Class of 2002 whose daughters later became dorm mates. Remarkably, she achieved this while still pursuing her studies.

Following graduation, Grutzik elevated her writing career, taking on live events such as the Lighting of the Lawn and the annual Trick-or-Treating on the Lawn. Executive Editor Mike Mather praised her contributions: “She quickly established herself as one of our most productive writers, publishing stories that earned tens of thousands of views,” he said. “Keeping her on after graduation was the easiest decision I ever made.”

Another fascinating piece by Matt Kelly, “Let history breathe: UVA masons are preserving the pillars of the past.,” explores the meticulous work involved in maintaining UVA’s historic architecture, with insights from mason supervisor Matt Proffitt.

Renowned for his storytelling, Bryan McKenzie, affectionately known as Mac, has crafted numerous features, including profiles of students and community members. His narrative of Maureen Leahey, a domestic violence survivor who completed her degree while raising her child, exemplifies his ability to convey respect and engagement with his subjects.

Zeina’s captivating article on Dean Greg Fairchild’s beekeeping hobby at UVA’s Northern Virginia campus, a relatively new addition to the university, showcases the intriguing details of his journey, complemented by Matt Riley’s vivid photography.

Timed perfectly for the Halloween season, Alice Berry’s feature, “Killer outfits,” offers an insightful look at UVA’s Historic Clothing Collection, detailing garments with dangerous histories. The story’s combination of engaging writing, compelling visuals, and interactive elements led to more than 10,600 pageviews.

Jane Kelly’s engaging topics include a story on the recycling of Halloween pumpkins at Feel Better Farm Equine and Farm Animal Rescue. Her article, “1 billion pounds of Halloween pumpkins rot every year. Donate yours to this rescue farm,” highlights the farm’s efforts to divert pumpkins from landfills.

Andrew’s poignant storytelling shines in his profile of Zac Yarbrough, a former UVA football player facing terminal breast cancer. Through vivid details, Andrew offers readers a glimpse into Yarbrough’s life and spirit, capturing the essence of his journey with depth and empathy.
