University of Virginia’s Democracy Institute Reaches Construction Milestone
The University of Virginia’s Karsh Institute of Democracy marked a significant milestone with a traditional “topping out” ceremony recently. The event featured the placement of the final steel beam at the building’s northeast corner, signaling the near completion of the framework.
Representatives from various university departments and committees were present at the ceremony. Among the attendees were members from the Karsh Planning Committee, the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy, and the Provost’s and President’s Offices, along with the Office of the Architect for the University and Facilities Management.
In keeping with tradition, the beam was adorned with a pine tree on top and an American flag hanging beneath it. Distinguished guests, including Melody Barnes, the executive director of the Karsh Institute, and Ian Solomon, dean of the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy, participated by signing the beam before it was hoisted into position.
Following a lunch hosted on-site, officials from Hourigan Construction led a tour of the construction area. Reflecting on the event, Melody Barnes stated, “Topping out this building marks more than a construction milestone. It represents a symbolic step toward realizing our vision for a dynamic home where the work of democracy comes to life through scholarship, teaching, engagement and collaboration.”
