University of Arizona Excels in 2026 Global Academic Subject Rankings

The University of Arizona has achieved remarkable placements in the recently published 2026 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy. This recognition highlights the institution’s excellence across various disciplines.

The rankings assess universities in 57 academic areas including medical, life, natural and social sciences, alongside engineering fields.

In the realm of library and information science, the University of Arizona’s program, part of the College of Information Science, has distinguished itself by securing the No. 4 spot worldwide and No. 3 in the U.S. This program, noted for its leadership in organizing, preserving, and sharing information across libraries and digital archives, is the university’s highest-ranked subject in the 2026 rankings.

“Reaching No. 4 in the world was an important achievement, but sustaining that position is especially meaningful,” remarked Catherine Brooks, interim dean of the College of Information Science. “It reflects the quality and impact of our faculty’s research, as well as the collaborative, interdisciplinary approach that has long defined information science at the University of Arizona.”

Focusing on earth sciences, the University of Arizona’s program, hosted by the College of Science, achieved a ranking of No. 3 among public universities, No. 7 in the U.S., and No. 16 globally. This program is committed to exploring environmental processes and the impact of human activity on the planet through research and outreach.

Additionally, the university’s water resources program, also within the College of Science, earned the No. 6 position among public and U.S. universities and No. 17 globally. Known for its leading research in hydrology and atmospheric sciences, the program hosts the esteemed Water Resources Research Center and advances climate resilience models.

Ecology, another discipline within the College of Science, was acknowledged for its achievements. The program, part of the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, was ranked No. 11 among public universities, No. 14 in the U.S., and No. 28 globally.

The University’s communication studies, offered by the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, were also recognized, achieving a ranking of No. 15 among public universities, No. 20 in the U.S., and No. 32 globally.
