Tony Elliott Among Finalists for 2025 Paul “Bear” Bryant Award

The University of Virginia’s football program continues to bask in the glory of its most successful season to date. Tony Elliott, the head coach, has been recognized as a finalist for a prestigious national award, underscoring the team’s remarkable achievements this year.

On Wednesday, it was announced that Tony Elliott is one of the eight contenders for the American Heart Association’s 2025 Paul “Bear” Bryant National Coach of the Year Award. The decision will be made public on Jan. 21 during an event in Houston.

Having already been honored as the Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year last month, Elliott successfully guided the Cavaliers to achieve an unprecedented 11-win season. This milestone was highlighted by their victory against the University of Missouri in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl on December 27 in Jacksonville, Florida.

Despite being predicted to rank 14th in a preseason media poll within the 17-team conference, UVA concluded the regular season with an impressive 7-1 record in the ACC, earning a spot in the conference championship game for the first time in six years. The Cavaliers are currently positioned at number 20 in the Associated Press poll, ensuring their first finish in the AP Top 25 since 2019.

Among Elliott’s competition for the Bryant Award are notable names such as Curt Cignetti from Indiana University, Bob Chesney from James Madison University, and Mario Cristobal from the University of Miami. This accolade, named after the iconic University of Alabama coach, Paul “Bear” Bryant, aims to spotlight coaches who have made a significant impact on college football.

The Bryant Award, in partnership with the American Heart Association, not only celebrates coaching excellence but also supports vital research efforts to combat cardiovascular disease and stroke. Paul “Bear” Bryant himself succumbed to a heart attack in 1983, lending a personal connection to the award’s mission.

The first-ever recipient of the Bryant Award was Pennsylvania State University’s Joe Paterno, who received the honor in 1986.
