Renowned author Tayari Jones, who holds a master’s degree in English from the University of Iowa, has been honored with the 2026 Kirkus Prize for Fiction for her latest work, Kin. This prestigious award highlights her significant contributions to contemporary literature.
The novel, Kin, marks Jones’ fifth literary venture and explores the enduring friendship between two girls who face life’s challenges without their mothers. The narrative delves into the divergent paths their lives take, garnering significant recognition by being featured in Oprah’s Book Club and former President Barack Obama’s summer reading list.
Daniel Khalastchi, executive director of the University of Iowa’s Office of Writing and Communication, praised Jones’ achievements, stating, “Iowa is known around the world as The Writing University for a reason. Our students, faculty, and alumni are shaping contemporary literature in unprecedented ways, and the work of Tayari Jones is a wonderful example of what can happen when we support individuals in their passion for literary arts.” He added, “Jones is a global talent whose local connection we couldn’t be prouder of. The Kirkus Prize is an extraordinary achievement, and we are thrilled to see this year it was awarded to a distinguished and transformative alum.”
Jones currently serves as the Charles Howard Candler Professor of Creative Writing at Emory University and holds the position of A.D. White Professor-at-Large at Cornell University. Her literary excellence is reflected in previous accolades, including the Women’s Prize for Fiction, the Aspen Words Literary Prize, and an NAACP Image Award, with her works reaching audiences in over two dozen countries.
Established in 2014, the Kirkus Prize stands as one of the most lucrative literary accolades worldwide, annually celebrating exceptional works across fiction, nonfiction, and young readers’ literature. Recipients in each category are awarded a substantial prize of $50,000.
