The Future of Mobility and Sustainability at Lehigh University
The transformation of Lehigh University’s campus is underway, with the Forest Park Initiative playing a pivotal role. This ambitious project stems from the university’s Inspiring the Future Makers Strategy and its 2025 campus master plan, Making the Future. The initiative aims to enhance connectivity across the campus through a network of woodland trails, promoting multi-modal transportation for both the university community and the nearby city of Bethlehem.
According to Nancy Rogo Trainer, Associate Vice President for Facilities and Campus Planning, the first phase of this initiative is a significant step in achieving the broader objectives of Making the Future. Trainer highlighted the long-term vision, stating, “In the coming years, as we activate more of the forest through additional trails, research and engagement, we will also be improving our campus infrastructure in ways that will further encourage walking and cycling.” She emphasized the importance of these developments in strengthening links between the Mountaintop and Historic Core districts.
Ensuring a Sustainable Forest Environment
Future plans for the Forest Park Initiative not only focus on expanding trails but also on actively managing the forest. This approach is designed to promote the growth of desirable tree species and ensure the forest’s longevity and health.
Joseph Helble, President of Lehigh University, Class of ’82, expressed his excitement about this transformative period in the institution’s history. “The Forest and the Mountaintop are such unique Lehigh spaces, and I’m excited to see the Forest Park Initiative realized in this way through the opening of this initial trail,” he commented. “This milestone marks a new era of access and stewardship for the university and the broader Lehigh Valley.”
