Gretchen Walsh, an outstanding swimmer from the University of Virginia, was recently recognized as the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the recipient of the Honda Cup. Although this honor was celebrated in New York, Walsh was unable to attend due to her training commitments in Charlottesville for the forthcoming World Aquatics Championships in Singapore.
During the CBS Sports Network’s live broadcast, Walsh expressed her excitement, saying, “I feel like I’m on cloud nine right now, honestly. Being nominated for this award last year was a big deal to me. To win it this year is obviously unreal.” She further shared her reflections on the recognition, highlighting the relentless nature of her sport and the satisfaction of seeing her efforts rewarded.
Walsh’s achievements extend beyond her recent accolade. As a two-time National Swimmer of the Year, she has been pivotal in leading UVA to five consecutive NCAA championships. Notably, she is the second UVA athlete to earn the Honda Cup, following in the footsteps of basketball great Dawn Staley, who received the award in 1991.
Her swimming career is marked by extraordinary accomplishments, including winning seven gold medals at the NCAA championship meet in March, which increased her total to 25. Walsh has set 17 world records and 38 American records, and she achieved remarkable Olympic success in Paris with four medals, two of which were gold.
Walsh is the first swimmer to win the Honda Cup since the consecutive victories of Stanford University’s Katie Ledecky and Simone Manuel in 2017 and 2018. She remarked on her win, stating, “I feel like this is a win for swimming as well, as much as it is for myself. I feel like I always take a lot of pride in representing the people who have come before me in the sport, especially women who have, so to be among that list of names is so cool.”
In addition to her athletic prowess, Walsh is a commendable student. She graduated from the McIntire School of Commerce and is a three-time Academic All-American, with two titles as ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Furthermore, she is among the nominees for the ESPY Awards’ “Best College Athlete – Women’s Sports.” Fans can vote for their preferred candidate until 5 p.m., July 16, the day of the awards show.
