Florida’s Ambitious 2026-2027 Budget: Key Highlights Unveiled by Governor Ron DeSantis
In a significant move reflecting Florida’s commitment to fiscal discipline and economic growth, Governor Ron DeSantis has unveiled the “Floridians First” budget proposal for the 2026-2027 fiscal year. With a total allocation of $117.4 billion, the budget emphasizes debt reduction, tax relief, and investments in education and infrastructure.
Fiscal Responsibility and Debt Management
Governor DeSantis has proposed $250 million towards debt reduction, setting Florida on a path to retire over 50% of its tax-supported debt by 2026-2027. The Budget Stabilization Fund has seen significant growth, reaching the constitutional cap of $5 billion, bolstered by a $118 million investment this year.
“Since I became governor, we have run budget surpluses, reduced the state’s legacy debt by more than 50%, and enacted record tax relief,” stated Governor DeSantis. He emphasized that the new budget will continue to prioritize fiscal responsibility and taxpayer savings.
Extensive Tax Relief Measures
Since taking office, DeSantis has introduced nearly $9.7 billion in tax relief, including the repeal of the commercial rent tax, providing $2.7 billion in annual savings for small businesses. The budget includes permanent and temporary sales tax holidays, with exemptions spanning essential items and recreational activities.
Continuing from 2025, the Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday will extend from September 7 to December 31, 2026, covering firearms, crossbows, and related accessories, potentially saving $35 million for Floridians.
Education: A Top Priority
Florida leads in education rankings, and the new budget reinforces this status with a historic $30.6 billion allocation for K-12 public education, ensuring a per-student investment increase to $9,406. Key funding includes $1.56 billion for teacher salaries and $1.71 billion for early childhood education.
The budget continues to support higher education with $1.9 billion for the Florida College System and $4 billion for the State University System, alongside $100 million for faculty recruitment and retention.
Infrastructure and Economic Growth
To maintain Florida’s economic momentum, the budget dedicates $14.3 billion to the state transportation work program, enhancing highways, seaports, and aviation facilities. Economic development is further supported by a $50 million Job Growth Grant Fund and $80 million for VISIT FLORIDA marketing efforts.
Environmental Initiatives
Environmental conservation is a cornerstone of the budget, with $1.4 billion earmarked for Everglades restoration and water quality. This includes significant allocations for the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan and Northern Everglades protection programs.
Public Safety and Community Support
Law enforcement receives robust support, with a 5% pay increase and funding for correctional officer positions. The budget also invests in community safety programs, including $15 million for the S.A.F.E. Program to combat drug-related issues.
Promoting Health and Well-being
With a focus on health, the budget allocates over $278 million for cancer research and $159 million for behavioral health services. Support for seniors and individuals with disabilities is strengthened with increased funding for elder care programs and disability services.
