The John Paul Jones Arena now features a new addition to its rafters, celebrating a legacy that has shaped the University of Virginia’s women’s basketball history. Debbie Ryan, a cornerstone of the program for over three decades, joins the ranks of celebrated Cavaliers like Donna Holt, Monica Wright, and Dawn Staley, all of whom played pivotal roles during her tenure.
In a heartfelt acknowledgment, Ryan expressed, “I told my players that that banner belonged to them. They earned it. And we worked very hard for it.” The sentiment reflects the deep connection between the coach and her players, underscoring the collaborative effort that defined her career.
During a commemorative ceremony held on Sunday, Ryan’s storied career was immortalized with a banner unveiling at halftime of the Wahoos’ 81-70 victory over the University of Notre Dame. The event was attended by a crowd of 5,223 fans, including many former players and staff who were part of Ryan’s journey.
A 2008 inductee into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, Ryan’s remarkable achievements include leading the Cavaliers to three Final Four appearances and securing 14 Atlantic Coast Conference regular season and tournament titles. Her retirement in the 2010-11 season left her with 739 career wins, a record that places her among the top 20 winningest coaches in women’s college basketball history, as noted by NCAA statistics.
In addressing the audience at the arena, Ryan emphasized the collective nature of her accomplishments, stating, “You all are a part of it, too. It’s your banner, too. It’s been the honor of my life to be a coach in this program.” Her speech was met with enthusiasm and respect from the attendees.
Ryan shared the spotlight on the court with her family, alongside UVA Director of Athletics Carla Williams and President Scott Beardsley, underscoring the community’s recognition of her indelible impact on the program.
