LANSING, Mich. – The historic Thunder Bay Theatre in Alpena is on the brink of reviving live theater in Northeast Michigan after overcoming challenges posed by two fires and a six-year pause. The theater’s restoration is nearing completion, thanks to a collaborative crowdfunding effort between the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and Thunder Bay Theatre, Inc., utilizing the Patronicity platform.
If the ongoing crowdfunding initiative achieves its target of $50,000 by November 14, the project will benefit from a matching grant through MEDC’s Public Spaces Community Places (PSCP) program. For additional information or to make a contribution, visit: patronicity.com/tbayt.
Paula Holtz, MEDC Managing Director for Regional Development, emphasized the significance of theaters as communal spaces, highlighting Thunder Bay Theatre’s role and stating, “Theatres are public institutions that go beyond being a space for shows; they often provide resources and community programming.”
Since 2023, a comprehensive $2 million renovation has been underway at the theater’s location at 400 N 2nd Ave in Downtown Alpena. The refurbishment is nearly complete, with plans to host an array of performances and events, including musicals, dramas, children’s shows, and community programs.
The raised funds will be directed toward essential enhancements such as acquiring new stage lighting, constructing a lighting grid and rigging system, upgrading sound equipment, and furnishing the lobby to accommodate diverse events and gatherings throughout the year.
Anne Gentry, Thunder Bay Theatre Board President, expressed optimism about the theater’s revival. “After two devastating fires and a six-year hiatus, Thunder Bay Theatre is ready to rise from the ashes and bring live, professional theatre back to Northeast Michigan,” she said, calling for community support to finalize the renovations.
Public Spaces Community Places is an initiative by MEDC, the Michigan Municipal League, and Patronicity, designed to enable residents to support community projects through crowdfunding, with potential matching grants from MEDC. Eligible parties can apply at https://patronicity.com/puremichigan.
Dan Gilmartin, CEO and Executive Director of the Michigan Municipal League, remarked on Thunder Bay Theatre’s significance, saying, “As the region’s only year-round professional theater, Thunder Bay Theatre is a wonderful community asset.” He highlighted the renovation as an investment that will benefit the region culturally and economically.
The Public Spaces Community Places program, initiated in 2014, has facilitated over 450 projects, raising $17.9 million from over 81,258 donors, with MEDC providing more than $15.7 million in matching funds. The initiative boasts a 97% success rate in helping communities achieve their fundraising goals.
