Efforts Underway to Safely Reopen Tyden Lofts After Ricin Scare
Residents of Tyden Lofts in Hastings, MI, are gradually returning to their homes as response teams work to ensure the building’s safety following a ricin scare. The re-entry process is being conducted in phases, with ongoing evaluations and environmental testing to determine if further cleanup is necessary.
As of Monday, September 14, 2026, the building’s second and third floors, along with the elevator and south stairwell, have been declared safe for residents to return. The following day, part of the first floor, comprising 13 units, was also cleared for re-entry, although the east stairwell remains restricted to authorized personnel only.
Residents are advised not to return to specific areas of the building until they receive official notification that it is safe to do so. Understanding the uncertainty faced by the residents and their families, response teams are prioritizing a swift yet cautious evaluation process to facilitate their return.
The Barry-Eaton District Health Department (BEDHD) has implemented new orders restricting access to specific sections of the first floor hallway, adjacent apartments, and the east stairwell. This measure will remain until testing, assessment, and any necessary remediation are completed. Entry into these areas is strictly prohibited without explicit authorization.
These actions are sanctioned under the Michigan Public Health Code, 1978 PA 368, as amended; MCL 333.2451; and Article V, Section 3 of the Barry-Eaton District Health Department Nuisance Code. The restrictions will be lifted only when the necessary public health actions are concluded, and the department issues written clearance.
State health officials have completed two Tyden Lofts Letter Health Consultations, offering additional insights into the health assessment and providing recommendations for the affected zones.
