North Carolina’s Film Industry: A Key Economic Driver Under the Spotlight
During a recent visit to Cinespace Studios in Wilmington, Governor Josh Stein and Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley discussed the significant role North Carolina’s film incentive program plays in bolstering the state’s economy. They emphasized the need for sustained support and certainty to ensure continued investment in the region.
“North Carolina’s film industry is an important part of our economy, supporting thousands of jobs and bringing millions in investment to our state,” said Governor Josh Stein. “We must protect that success and give productions the certainty they need to continue to invest here for the long term.”
Highlighting the global exposure the state receives through film productions, Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley added, “Our film industry creates great jobs while putting the best of our state on screen for the world to see. We are committed to working with the General Assembly to find a solution that will keep cameras rolling across North Carolina.”
The North Carolina Film and Entertainment Grant Program offers enticing financial rebates to film production companies, with up to 25% back on approved in-state expenses. This initiative has been pivotal, with nearly 60 productions in 2024 alone leading to over $302 million in direct local expenditure. Over the past decade, film projects have injected more than $1.3 billion into the state’s economy, creating nearly 67,000 job opportunities. Notable projects include “RJ Decker” Seasons 1 and 2, “Beast Games” Season 2, and “Top Chef” Season 23.
Equipped with a skilled workforce of over 4,000 film professionals and a multitude of prime filming locations, North Carolina continues to attract major productions. In addition to the 25% rebate, the state provides robust filming infrastructure, a straightforward incentive system, quick production timelines, and efficient communication with various stakeholders.
