Embarking on a strategic journey to Australia, Governor Gretchen Whitmer is set to fortify Michigan’s economic future by engaging with key players in crucial growth sectors such as mobility, defense, clean energy, and cybersecurity. This mission underscores Michigan’s commitment to fostering international partnerships that promise mutual growth and innovation.
Strengthening Ties with Australia
LANSING, Mich. – Governor Whitmer’s visit highlights Michigan’s enduring relationship with Australia, particularly in the automotive and mobility domains. In a significant move earlier this year, the governor, alongside Australia’s Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, signed an updated Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This agreement reaffirms their dedication to collaboration in future mobility and transportation sectors.
This mission is poised to advance the MOU’s goals through targeted company meetings, roundtables, and the exchange of expertise. “This investment mission will build on Michigan’s longstanding, shared heritage with Australia and strengthen our ties as we build on our future in the mobility, defense, clean energy, and cybersecurity industries,” stated Governor Whitmer. “I look forward to sharing this experience with our Michigan delegation and engaging with global partners in Australia.”
Michigan’s Strategic Advantage
Highlighting Michigan’s unique position, Quentin L. Messer, Jr., CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, emphasized the state’s potential to leverage international relationships at the subnational level. “With our legacy of innovation, world-class advanced manufacturing assets, and strategic access to North American markets, Michigan is an ideal entry point for Australian companies looking to grow in the U.S. and North America more broadly,” he noted.
Michigan’s robust defense background, dating back to its “Arsenal of Democracy” era during World War II, positions it as a powerful gateway for Australian defense companies entering the U.S. market. “Today, its advanced industrial base, highly skilled talent, and spirit of innovation position Michigan as an ideal partner for strategic investment and co-development,” said U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Paul D. Rogers.
Key Meetings and Engagements
During the mission, Governor Whitmer and her delegation will engage with several prominent companies, including Stryker and Penske Corporation, both of which have significant operations in Australia. Additionally, the delegation will tour a Penske frigate vessel at Garden Island Naval Base.
The governor also plans to meet with Australian government officials in New South Wales and Victoria to explore opportunities for cultural and economic exchanges. The itinerary includes hosting business roundtables with the American Chamber of Commerce and other industry leaders.
Members of Michigan’s Delegation
The delegation accompanying Governor Whitmer comprises representatives from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Paul D. Rogers from the Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, and key figures from Michigan’s educational institutions.
“Michigan has long been the global epicenter of automotive innovation, and today we’re leading the mobility transformation,” said Chief Mobility Officer Justine Johnson. “Australia presents a powerful opportunity to connect and foster investment that drives progress in both of our regions.”
Representatives from the Michigan Department of Transportation and leading universities echo the sentiment, underscoring Michigan’s role in fostering innovation and collaboration across the globe.
