Governor Josh Stein took the stage at NC State University’s State Energy Conference of North Carolina, discussing the evolving landscape and potential of the state’s clean energy sector.
“North Carolina is well-positioned to compete and win in the clean tech industries that are shaping the future of energy,” declared Governor Stein. He emphasized the need for an energy system that ensures consumer protection, reduces pollution, and fosters economic growth, especially as energy affordability and reliability remain critical concerns for residents.
In efforts to decrease energy costs for households and reduce reliance on carbon, Governor Stein recently proposed a budget for the fiscal year 2026-2027. This budget aims to push the Department of Administration toward energy efficiency measures that will yield long-term savings.
North Carolina stands as a frontrunner in the clean energy sector, employing over 100,000 individuals in related jobs and another 450,000 in companies committed to net-zero objectives. Governor Stein has been instrumental in securing over $4.9 billion in investments and 15,000 jobs through global clean energy and technology companies. Since 2015, a significant $59.6 billion has been invested in North Carolina by companies with net-zero goals, representing half of the total investment in major economic projects.
Governor Stein also engaged with business leaders in Davidson, highlighting the state’s progress in the clean energy economy. He further expanded the Energy Saver NC program to all counties in February, facilitating household savings of approximately $1,000 annually via rebates for energy-efficient home upgrades and appliances.
Last year, Governor Stein established the North Carolina Energy Policy Task Force to devise strategies ensuring affordable and sustainable energy for the state’s growing needs. An interim report from February highlighted the task force’s findings and policy recommendations, which can be accessed here.
