Wisconsin Mobilizes Emergency Operations in Response to Severe Weather
MADISON, Wis. – As severe weather and flooding began to affect Wisconsin on April 13, the Wisconsin Emergency Management (WEM) took decisive action by elevating the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) on April 14 to level 2 response. This partial SEOC activation is designed to assist local jurisdictions that may become overwhelmed by the incidents.
At this heightened level of response, the SEOC is coordinating with various state agencies to bolster local emergency efforts. These agencies include:
- Wisconsin Department of Transportation
- Wisconsin Department of Health Services
- Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources
Staying Safe: Tips for Residents
Residents are encouraged to keep informed through local communication channels, such as websites, social media, and news media, to receive area-specific information. Additional safety measures include:
- Receive Weather Alerts: Enable wireless emergency alerts on your phone for real-time updates. Check your phone settings to ensure compatibility.
- Prepare for Power Outages: Keep devices charged and have a flashlight with spare batteries ready.
- Reliable Weather Updates: Use trusted sources for timely weather information.
- Tornado Safety: Identify a safe location in your home, such as the lowest level in an interior room. For mobile home residents, evacuate to a safer location upon a tornado watch.
- Flash Floods: Move to higher ground if flooding occurs. Never attempt to walk or drive through floodwaters.
- Hailstorms: Seek immediate indoor shelter, stay away from windows, and follow safety protocols if driving.
- Community Support: Check on neighbors, especially the elderly or those with disabilities, to ensure their safety.
