Wisconsin Cancels Statewide Tornado Drills Due to Ongoing Storm Recovery Efforts
Amidst ongoing recovery efforts from recent severe storms, Wisconsin officials have decided to cancel the annual statewide tornado drills originally set for April 16, 2026. This decision reflects the need to prioritize current emergency response activities over scheduled preparedness exercises.
Communities across Wisconsin have been significantly affected by recent adverse weather conditions, necessitating a focused response from emergency management and local agencies. ReadyWisconsin, the state’s emergency preparedness program, concluded that the drills would divert crucial resources from the ongoing recovery operations. Many areas are still in the process of damage assessment and providing support to those affected.
Greg Engle, Administrator of Wisconsin Emergency Management, emphasized the importance of prioritizing immediate safety and recovery efforts. “While tornado preparedness is critically important, our immediate priority is on the safety and recovery of those impacted by these recent storms,” he said. Engle acknowledged the significance of the drills, yet highlighted the current need for community flexibility in addressing real-world challenges.
Despite the cancellation, ReadyWisconsin urges residents to stay informed about tornado safety and to continually review their personal emergency plans. The organization provides resources and guidance on its website at https://readywisconsin.wi.gov/tornadoes/.
Looking ahead, the next scheduled statewide tornado drills in Wisconsin will occur on April 15, 2027.
