Trump Threatens 50% Tariff on Canadian Aircraft Amid Trade Feud

By MICHELLE L. PRICE

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has stirred up tension with Canada by threatening a significant tariff on aircraft imported into the U.S. This move marks another chapter in his ongoing trade conflict with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, as highlighted in a recent report on their trade disputes.

This threat, conveyed through social media, follows a weekend announcement where Trump warned of a potential 100% tariff on Canadian imports should Canada proceed with its planned trade agreement with China. However, details on the timing of these tariffs were not provided, and Canada has already finalized its trade deal.

The latest threat from Trump, a Republican, is in response to Canada’s decision not to certify jets produced by Gulfstream Aerospace, a company based in Savannah, Georgia. Trump stated that unless the issue is resolved, the U.S. would decertify all Canadian aircraft, affecting major manufacturers like Bombardier. “If, for any reason, this situation is not immediately corrected, I am going to charge Canada a 50% Tariff on any and all Aircraft sold into the United States of America,” Trump declared in his social media post.

Attempts to reach spokespeople for Bombardier and Canada’s transport minister for comments on Thursday evening were not successful.

Associated Press writer Rob Gillies in Toronto contributed to this report.
