LANSING, Mich. – Exciting developments are underway in Michigan as Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced significant business expansion projects in Midland and St. Clair counties, promising a total of $44.5 million in capital investment and the creation of 104 well-paying jobs.
“In every corner of our state, people and businesses are choosing Michigan to grow and thrive as small business owners, entrepreneurs, and residents,” stated Governor Whitmer. “Today’s $44 million investment and creation of 104 good-paying jobs by DDP Specialty Electronic Materials and Legacy Port Huron Paper Company is another win that will position Michigan as a leader in advanced manufacturing for EV materials and food-grade packaging.”
Matt McCauley, SVP of Regional Development at MEDC, also emphasized Michigan’s business-friendly environment, saying, “The expansion announcements from these two Michigan-headquartered companies highlight the strength of Michigan’s business climate and the confidence employers have in Michigan as the ideal place to grow.”
DDP Specialty Electronic Materials: Expanding in Midland
DDP Specialty Electronic Materials US, LLC, a subsidiary of DuPont, is set to expand its facility in Midland by adding 6,000 square feet for a new production process aimed at the global EV industry. This project will include new truck docks, warehouse space, and a five-story manufacturing space, focusing on advanced thermal adhesive technologies for EV batteries.
Ron Thompson, DuPont Michigan Operations Site Leader, expressed gratitude for the state’s support, noting, “We are sincerely grateful to the State of Michigan and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation for their support.”
The expansion, which is expected to generate $20 million in capital investment and create 22 jobs, is supported by a $200,000 Michigan Business Development Program grant.
Despite considering locations in China and Germany, the company chose Michigan, drawn by the state’s robust EV ecosystem. Additional support includes local real property tax abatement and a State Education Tax abatement.
Legacy Port Huron Paper: Revitalizing Industrial Spaces
Legacy Port Huron Paper Company, a BMI Group subsidiary, plans to repurpose nearly 400,000 square feet in Port Huron for industrial uses, revitalizing former papermill spaces.
Tim Wight, General Manager, stated, “By combining experienced papermakers and skilled trades professionals, we are putting proven Michigan papermaking talent back to work.”
This project is anticipated to deliver $24.5 million in capital investment and create 82 jobs, supported by a $1 million MBDP performance-based grant.
The initiative reflects the increasing demand for sustainable packaging, driven by the fast food market’s growth and the rise of delivery services like DoorDash and Uber Eats.
City Manager James R. Freed commented on the project’s significance, saying, “By putting our skilled tradespeople and craftspeople back to work, we are creating good-paying careers at home.”
