LANSING, Mich. – Michigan is making waves on the global stage as Governor Gretchen Whitmer embarks on an investment mission to Switzerland. This initiative is aimed at bolstering the state’s reputation as a hub for advanced manufacturing, defense, and high-tech industries.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer emphasized Michigan’s readiness for business on the international front. “Michigan is open for business, and we’re continuing to compete and win on the global stage,” stated Governor Whitmer. She highlighted the state’s efforts in innovation, workforce development, and manufacturing, noting the state’s commitment to creating opportunities and vibrant communities. Governor Whitmer is set to engage directly with global leaders at the World Economic Forum (WEF) to further these aims.
During the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2026, Governor Whitmer will address the Global Lighthouse Network and participate in key discussions, including panels on electric vehicles and U.S. governance. A significant focus will be on Michigan’s educational and skilled trades investments, discussed in a press conference with American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten, under the theme “Closing the Manufacturing Talent Gap in the U.S. and Beyond.” Interested parties can follow the proceedings via a livestream.
Michigan’s participation in WEF highlights its strategic role in global supply chains, especially in defense, aerospace, advanced mobility, and clean energy. The state’s defense sector, bolstered by a skilled workforce and a strong manufacturing framework, is at the forefront of this mission. By engaging on this global platform, Michigan aims to attract investments and ensure its voice is pivotal in discussions about the future of industry and trade.
During her visit, Governor Whitmer will meet with executives, investors, and industry leaders to showcase Michigan’s competitive advantages. These meetings intend to expand business operations within Michigan, attract new foreign investments, and solidify Michigan’s role in global defense and security supply chains.
Quentin L. Messer, Jr., CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), accompanies Governor Whitmer on this mission. Messer stated, “Michigan has one of the most diverse and resilient economies in the nation, and our defense and advanced manufacturing strengths are powerful draws for international partners.” He emphasized the importance of these investment missions in promoting Michigan’s economic development strategy to global decision-makers.
Switzerland is a strategic partner, housing numerous companies in areas that align with Michigan’s economic goals. As the ninth largest source of foreign direct investment (FDI) for Michigan, Swiss companies have invested significantly in the state, leading to job creation and substantial capital investment.
This mission is a component of Michigan’s comprehensive strategy to attract international investment, support local businesses, and strengthen key industries critical to the state’s economy and national security.
