Detroit Provides Emergency Shelters and Respite Centers Amidst Bitter Cold
As Detroit braces for a severe cold spell with temperatures expected to plummet into the teens and wind chills dipping into single digits, the city has mobilized resources to safeguard its residents. The City of Detroit, in collaboration with partners, is opening stand-by shelters and respite centers to offer protection and warmth from the harsh weather conditions.
Overnight Shelter Arrangements
To ensure the safety of those without secure housing, the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries is offering an overnight stand-by shelter at 13130 Woodward Avenue. This facility will operate around the clock until January 21 at noon, catering to single men, women, and families with children. Additionally, the Pope Francis Center will open its doors to single adults seeking shelter from January 19 at 5 p.m. to January 21 at noon, located at 2915 W. Hancock.
Accessing Shelter Services
Residents in need of overnight shelter can simply walk in at any time or call the Detroit Housing Resource HelpLine at 866-313-2520 for assistance. Those requiring urgent help after hours are advised to visit a police precinct for a connection to outreach services. Moreover, in-person CAM sites like Cass Community Social Services and NOAH at Central will offer assistance on specific dates. For further details, visit camdetroit.org.
Daytime Respite Options
To offer daytime refuge from the cold, the City of Detroit will keep all recreation centers open as respite locations during regular hours, except for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Notably, Adams Butzel Complex and Coleman A. Young Recreation Center will remain operational on MLK Day from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Residents can also seek warmth at any Detroit Public Library branch during its regular hours, excluding January 19 when all branches will be closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Additional Support Services
For individuals facing domestic violence, the Michigan Domestic Violence Hotline is available at 1-866-864-2338. Those experiencing mental health emergencies can reach out to 9-8-8 or the Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network’s 24-Hour Helpline at 1-800-241-4949.
