First-Gen Student Explores London Thanks to Walker Scholarship

Unexpected Opportunities Abroad: A Student’s Journey

For many students, the thought of studying abroad conjures images of long separations from home and higher costs. However, second-year public policy student Dariana Martinez-Bautista found a different path. Initially hesitant about leaving her family and friends in Winchester for an extended period, she discovered a short-term opportunity that changed her perspective.

“I was always under this impression that if I studied abroad, I would be missing a full semester at UVA,” Martinez-Bautista shared. “So, I was like, ‘No, I’m not going to study abroad.’”

The discovery of short-term study programs, coupled with the Walker Scholarship, opened doors to international travel that seemed unreachable before. As the first in her family to consider such an endeavor, Martinez-Bautista had never imagined studying in a different country due to the high costs associated with flights and other expenses.

Thanks to the Walker Scholarship, she enrolled in a two-week program in London last summer, where she explored democracy and British culture. The program included classroom lectures and visits to cultural landmarks such as the British Museum and a renowned portrait gallery.

One of the highlights of her experience was a weekend at the University of Oxford, where she immersed herself in local traditions and indulged in culinary delights like fish and chips and chocolate-covered strawberries from a bustling local market.

Martinez-Bautista credits the scholarship for her transformative experience. “I wouldn’t have studied abroad if it weren’t for that scholarship,” she said. “I’m super grateful that they have provided me with so many opportunities.”
