Construction Set to Begin on Controversial Israeli Settlement
In a move that could reshape the geopolitical landscape, Israel is poised to commence construction on a contentious settlement project near Jerusalem, as indicated by a recent government tender. This development marks a significant step toward realizing the E1 project, a plan that has been a subject of international debate for over two decades.
The proposal, which seeks bids from developers, was first brought to light by Peace Now, an organization that monitors settlement activities. Yoni Mizrahi, who leads the group’s settlement watch division, noted that preliminary work could begin as early as next month.
E1 is a strategically significant area located east of Jerusalem. While the plan has been under consideration for years, it was previously stalled due to pressure from the United States during earlier U.S. administrations.
The project is particularly controversial as it stretches from Jerusalem into the West Bank, an area where international consensus considers Israeli settlements illegal and a hindrance to peace. Critics argue that the settlement would hinder the establishment of a contiguous Palestinian state.
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, known for his far-right views, has been a strong advocate for the project. He stated in August, “The Palestinian state is being erased from the table not with slogans but with actions. Every settlement, every neighborhood, every housing unit is another nail in the coffin of this dangerous idea.”
The tender, available on Israel’s Land Authority website, outlines plans to develop 3,401 housing units. According to Peace Now, this signifies an expedited push to advance the E1 construction.
The international community continues to watch closely as this development unfolds, given its implications for future Israeli-Palestinian relations.
