Intriguing Legislation and Engaging Trivia: A Journey Through Carmel-by-the-Sea and Beyond
In the quaint town of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, a unique law once prohibited the sale and consumption of ice cream on its public streets. The rationale behind this legislation remains a mystery, yet it adds a quirky charm to the town’s history.
Olivia Brown, an accomplished trivia creator with degrees in American studies and history, has turned her passion for puzzles into a thriving side business. Her journey began in late 2021 at Starr Hill Brewery, where she discovered her knack for crafting engaging trivia games. During the day, she applies her academic expertise as the executive director of the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society.
Brown’s trivia events often revolve around specific themes. For example, she recently hosted a Hanukkah-themed trivia night at Starr Hill’s Dairy Market location on December 21. These events consist of three rounds with eight questions each, providing participants with a two-hour immersive experience. “Each team gets answer sheets that, as a team, they come up with their answers to all eight questions,” she explained. “Then at the end of the round, they bring that up to me, and then I do all the scoring and grading and put it in a spreadsheet to find the winner.”
Starting in January, trivia enthusiasts can join Brown at Three Notch’d Craft Kitchen and Brewing on Monday evenings at 7 p.m. and Fridays at 6 p.m. at Superfly Brewery Co. Participation in her quizzes is free, although reservations are recommended and can be made here. Brown is also available for private events and has plans to host March Madness trivia games, hopeful for a strong performance by the Cavaliers in 2026.
As a special treat to conclude 2025, Brown has crafted a unique UVA Today trivia game for readers to enjoy.
