Discover the Joy in Movement
Finding happiness in physical activities is key to maintaining a long-term fitness routine. If the activity doesn’t excite you, it’s unlikely to become a sustainable habit.
“If you don’t like it, it’s not sustainable,” Perkins explained. “It should come from a health perspective – what do you enjoy doing that would feel natural for the rest of your life, not just because it’s a goal?”
Instead of “exercise,” Perkins prefers the term “movement,” emphasizing the necessity for our bodies to stay active.
“Some people like to move in the water, woods, on a court, field or bike,” she noted. The goal is to select an activity that you eagerly anticipate and that alleviates stress rather than feeling like another chore.
You’re more inclined to engage in an activity you love after a challenging day. “If you pick something you don’t like, you’re unlikely to be successful,” Perkins stated.
The Power of an Accountability Partner
Social connections significantly influence the ability to sustain healthy habits.
“A lot of success comes when you have a buddy or a troop of people you like to do things with. You have a little bit more accountability,” Perkins shared.
Whether joining a running group, playing on a sports team, meeting a friend at the gym, or walking with a neighbor, having companions who expect your presence can greatly impact your commitment.
Besides accountability, social interaction is crucial for overall well-being. “Humans are social beings,” Perkins remarked. Being around supportive people fosters an environment conducive to nurturing healthy habits.
Importance of Reflection and Reevaluation
Consistent self-reflection is vital for achieving long-lasting health objectives.
“Take time to reflect and appreciate your progress,” said Perkins. People often jump to the next goal without acknowledging their accomplishments.
Regularly assess your goals. Consider whether the goal is still suitable and if it brings about positive mental, physical, and social changes.
“People get so busy that they don’t give themselves space to reflect on where they are and what they’ve accomplished,” she added.
Perkins stressed the importance of focusing on habits rather than results. Instead of setting a goal like losing 15 pounds, consider whether you need to alter habits, enhance flexibility, or build muscle.
Healthy transformations require time.
“Progress doesn’t happen overnight,” Perkins pointed out. “It takes these healthy patterns building on each other and interacting over time to get the outcome you’re seeking.”
