Showcasing UVA’s Photographers: Capturing Unique Stories and Moments

Capturing Moments: Behind the Lens with UVA’s Visual Storytellers

In the world of photography and visual storytelling at the University of Virginia, moments of brilliance often stem from meticulous planning and the ability to adapt. This is a tale of creativity and collaboration, where each click of the camera shutter aims to transcend mere documentation.

Matt Riley: Crafting the Perfect Shot

Matt Riley, a senior photographer at UVA Today, often finds that the best results come from unexpected angles. His approach was evident when photographing Brian Douglas, a kinesiology student and accomplished athlete. Initially planning to capture Douglas alongside his self-made prosthetics outside his apartment, Riley’s creativity sparked when he noticed the dramatic clouds. “The clouds were incredible that day,” Riley observed, creating a backdrop that accentuated Douglas’s story.

Another memorable project involved a detailed setup to showcase Gretchen Walsh, an Olympic medalist. The image, depicting Walsh seemingly standing on water, was a testament to teamwork and careful planning. Despite Walsh’s initial hesitation, Riley’s preparation ensured the shoot’s success, highlighting the collaborative effort behind the lens.

Riley’s patience was further tested with the Pratt ginkgo tree, where he and Lathan Goumas visited repeatedly to capture its seasonal transformation. The final image, taken at night, combined vibrant colors and movement, illustrating the beauty of patience in photography.

Lathan Goumas: Capturing Authenticity

Photographer Lathan Goumas embraces the diversity of his assignments, from showcasing research to documenting joyful university events. His first project at UVA, capturing a ‘Friday Rest Fest’ event, focused on creating a serene, silhouetted image that encapsulated the event’s tranquil atmosphere.

Goumas’s work at the Mountain Lake Biological Station involved students in the Field Biology of Fishes course. His images brought viewers close to nature, capturing intimate moments like a student examining a fish. His creative approach was also evident in his portrait of Hannah Zook, a para climbing athlete, where he aimed to demonstrate her exceptional abilities uniquely.

Erin Edgerton: Honoring Significance through Imagery

Social media manager Erin Edgerton focuses on creating meaningful images. Her portrait of Renee Grutzik, a student writer, aimed to celebrate Grutzik’s journey at UVA. By choosing the office as the setting, Edgerton highlighted the space’s significance to Grutzik’s experience.

Edgerton also captures the excitement of annual events, such as the first day of class pop-up. Her images serve as cherished mementos for students, fostering a sense of community. A recent drone image, taken with videographer Kelly West, perfectly captured fleeting autumn light, showcasing Edgerton’s ability to seize the right moment.

Tobias Wilbur: Illustrations with Impact

Art director Tobias Wilbur uses illustrations to draw readers in, creating engaging visuals for stories like a custody battle involving Tucker the goldendoodle. His work on a story about online dating mixed human connection with digital interfaces, while another project addressed the serious issue of early smartphone use and its effects.

John DiJulio: Visual Storytelling through Design

Digital designer John DiJulio’s illustrations help convey complex ideas succinctly. His work includes a simple yet effective image for a story on youth voter turnout, transforming an “I Voted” sticker into a statement on non-participation. DiJulio’s animated illustrations, like the one for a story on return policies, combine visual appeal with storytelling, engaging readers effectively.
