Village of L’Anse Earns RRC Essentials Designation for Development Efforts

The Village of L’Anse Earns Key Development Recognition

LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) has distinguished the Village of L’Anse by awarding it the Redevelopment Ready Communities (RRC) Essentials designation. This recognition comes as a result of the village’s efforts to streamline its development processes and set a clear vision for community growth.

The RRC program, initiated statewide in 2013, is a voluntary scheme that encourages communities to proactively embrace planning, zoning, and economic development best practices. By doing so, they become more attractive to prospective investors and developers, fostering environments where people wish to live and work.

Responding to feedback from communities and stakeholders, the MEDC refined the RRC framework, introducing two pathways: “Essentials” and “Certified.” Communities can select the path that aligns with their specific needs, capabilities, and objectives. Securing the Essentials designation means a community has laid the groundwork essential for future growth.

“We applaud the Village of L’Anse for achieving Essentials status,” remarked MEDC Chief Place Officer Michele Wildman. “The Village of L’Anse has identified its desired direction for the future and has a plan to achieve its goals for the community. We look forward to building upon our relationship with the village and supporting its continued economic development efforts.”

The Village of L’Anse met the requirements for the Essentials designation by adopting a comprehensive master plan, developing a capital improvements plan, and offering online resources to clarify its review processes. These steps ensure a predictable development experience and fulfill local planning and zoning obligations under Michigan law.

“The Village is excited to achieve the RRC Essentials milestone,” shared Village Manager Bob La Fave. “We look forward to working with our partners at the MEDC to further the development of our community.”

Across Michigan, 82 communities have achieved the Certified level with the RRC program, while 31, including L’Anse, have attained the Essentials level. These recognitions underscore a community’s readiness in planning and zoning, crucial for attracting potential investors. See the entire list of Redevelopment Ready Communities.

“The Village has long been a leader in development in Baraga County,” stated Village President Ron Ervast. “Having achieved RRC Essentials status, we look forward to collaborating with the MEDC in building a better L’Anse and Baraga County.”
