As tornadoes, fires, floods, and other emergencies remain beyond our control, the importance of preparation cannot be overstated. In Wisconsin, Governor Tony Evers has officially marked September as Preparedness Month, urging individuals and communities to take proactive steps to mitigate the impacts of potential disasters.
Wisconsin Emergency Management Administrator Greg Engle emphasized the significance of beginning preparedness at home, stating, “Wisconsinites can help themselves by taking a few simple preparedness steps, starting right in their own homes.” Engle highlighted the benefits of a foundation in preparedness, which aids in quicker recovery and enhances resilience during emergencies.
Building an adequate level of preparedness is a gradual process. This September, take the opportunity to either initiate or advance your family’s journey towards greater resilience.
- Develop your blueprints. Identify potential disasters and risks in your locale, whether at home, work, or school. Ensure you have multiple methods to receive alerts, such as trusted weather apps, Wireless Emergency Alerts, local news, or community systems like Nixle or Code Red.
- Set your Foundation. Formulate a family emergency plan addressing scenarios where you might need to shelter in place or evacuate. Regularly practice this plan.
- Add the Finishing Touches. Assemble an emergency supply kit in a single location, including essentials like a first aid kit, nonperishable food, water, and flashlights. Consider medical necessities and supplies for pets, and keep them in waterproof, portable containers for easy transport.
- Plan a Maintenance Timeline. Review insurance policies for your home and vehicles to ensure adequate coverage. Keep important documents accessible in waterproof containers or through cloud storage, updating them annually or as necessary.
With the onset of fall, additional mitigation measures can help safeguard your home. These measures might include trimming branches, clearing gutters of leaves and debris, or arranging a roof inspection.
Engle further stated, “Preparedness Month is our annual reminder that readiness is not just a one-time precaution but an ongoing necessity.” Although planning for unforeseen events might initially seem daunting, being prepared provides peace of mind.
Nationally, Preparedness Month is observed every September as part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Ready campaign. This year’s theme, “Preparedness Starts at Home,” encourages actions individuals can take to build more resilient communities in emergencies.
