Ensure a Safe Independence Day with Fireworks and Summer Safety Tips

As the nation gears up for Independence Day festivities, safety should be at the forefront of everyone’s mind. ReadyWisconsin is urging the public to take necessary precautions to ensure that celebrations involving fireworks, outdoor gatherings, and travel are both enjoyable and secure.

“Celebrating the holiday and safety go hand in hand,” emphasized Greg Engle, the Wisconsin Emergency Management Administrator, urging the community to review safety plans and stay informed about weather conditions.

In 2024, fireworks-related injuries led to 137 emergency room visits in Wisconsin, as reported by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services. Alarmingly, children under 18 made up more than 25% of these cases. Given the dangers, it is crucial that children are kept away from handling fireworks, including sparklers, which can burn at temperatures as high as 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

While community-run fireworks displays remain the safest option, those opting for personal use should adhere to these guidelines from ReadyWisconsin:

  • Comply with local fireworks laws and obtain the necessary permits.
  • Always ignite fireworks outdoors, keeping a water source like a bucket or hose nearby.
  • Maintain a distance of at least 35 feet for ground-based fireworks.
  • In the event of a dud, do not attempt to re-light or approach it. Allow five to ten minutes before submerging in water.
  • Fireworks can distress pets. Keep them indoors with blinds closed and background noise such as a TV or radio.
  • Light only one firework at a time to prevent accidents from unpredictable fuse speeds.
  • Consider alternatives like party poppers, bubbles, silly string, or glow sticks for safer celebrations.

Fireworks aren’t the only concern on the Fourth of July. For those planning barbecues, road trips, or pool parties, these safety tips are essential:

  • Prepare a car emergency kit including water, snacks, and a phone charger. Use 511Wisconsin for traffic updates.
  • Never leave humans or animals in a parked car, as temperatures can rapidly become life-threatening.
  • Ensure adult supervision at pools and utilize flotation devices as needed.
  • Position grills at least three feet from structures, have a fire extinguisher ready, and maintain a safe area around the grill.
