Join Maricopa’s 100 Miles in 100 Days Challenge Starting Nov 1

As the Arizona heat starts to wane, outdoor enthusiasts in Maricopa County have a unique opportunity to explore nature’s offerings. The annual 100 Miles in 100 Days Challenge is set to kick off on November 1, inviting both locals and visitors to experience the extensive trail system maintained by Maricopa County Parks and Recreation.

Jennifer Waller, the Director of Maricopa County Parks and Recreation, emphasizes the richness of the trail networks, stating, “With more than 600 miles of trails across our regional park system, there is always somewhere new to explore.” As part of this initiative, participants can engage in various activities such as hiking, running, horseback riding, or mountain biking to achieve their fitness goals while soaking in the beauty of the Sonoran Desert.

Originally created in 2012 for the county’s centennial, the Challenge has since become a highlight of the parks’ annual calendar. Participants have a hundred days to cover a hundred miles on foot or horseback, or double that distance on a mountain bike.

In the previous year, the Challenge saw 603 participants collectively cover an astounding 80,415 miles. A standout performer logged over 1,050 miles, while others surpassed 300 miles, showcasing the event’s appeal and participants’ determination.

Engagement is further enhanced by a dedicated Facebook community page where participants can track their progress, share trail tips, and post photos, fostering a sense of camaraderie and support.

Completing the Challenge not only brings personal satisfaction but also enters participants into a drawing for a grand-prize package, which includes an annual park pass valued at $140 and a $25 Nature Center retail voucher.

Whether you prefer to hike, run, bike, or ride a horse, the 100 Miles in 100 Days Challenge offers a rewarding way to enjoy the outdoors. Mark your calendars for the start on November 1, 2026, with the final day being February 8, 2027, at 4 p.m.
