North Carolina’s Film Industry: A Catalyst for Economic Growth
In a visit to Wilmington’s Cinespace Studios, Governor Josh Stein and Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley underscored the significance of North Carolina’s film industry to the state’s economy. The discussions revolved around how recent amendments to the film incentive program could further impact economic growth in the region.
“North Carolina’s film industry is an important part of our economy, supporting thousands of jobs and bringing millions in investment to our state,” said Governor Josh Stein. “We must protect that success and give productions the certainty they need to continue to invest here for the long term.”
The North Carolina Film and Entertainment Grant Program plays a pivotal role in attracting film production to the state, offering up to 25% in financial rebates for qualified in-state production expenses. In 2024 alone, nearly 60 productions were filmed across North Carolina, resulting in over $302 million in direct spending and creating approximately 67,000 job opportunities over the past decade.
Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley emphasized the cultural and economic benefits of the film industry, stating, “Our film industry creates great jobs while putting the best of our state on screen for the world to see.” He also highlighted their commitment to collaborating with the General Assembly to ensure the continued success of the industry in North Carolina.
With a robust workforce of more than 4,000 film professionals and a diverse array of filming locations, North Carolina offers a comprehensive package for film productions. This includes the 25% rebate, well-established filming infrastructure, streamlined incentive programs, and efficient communication channels with both private and public entities. Recent high-profile projects such as “RJ Decker,” “Beast Games,” “Top Chef,” and “The Hunting Wives” have showcased North Carolina’s appeal as a filming destination.
