Return of Child Welfare Services Control to Bertie County
In a significant development, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) has officially handed back control of child welfare services to the Bertie County Department of Social Services. This transition, effective today, marks the end of a period of temporary state oversight initiated in August 2025 due to critical child safety concerns.
According to NC Health and Human Services Secretary Dev Sangvai, “It is our priority to ensure the safety and well-being of every child in North Carolina.” He expressed gratitude towards the Bertie County leadership for their collaborative efforts in enhancing the county’s child welfare systems. The partnership aimed at strengthening the practice, delivery, and management of these essential services.
Bertie County DSS Director Yolanda White acknowledged the transformative journey the county has undergone. “This has been a journey of growth, accountability, and transformation. I am incredibly grateful for the dedication and resilience of our child welfare team,” she stated. White emphasized the importance of maintaining the improvements made, committing to vigilance and accountability in future practices.
To support Bertie County’s continued progress, NCDHHS will maintain its role in providing ongoing technical assistance and oversight. This includes conducting case evaluations, offering practice guidance, and facilitating collaborative problem-solving with county leaders.
