Library Hour Program Engages Kids with Games and Crafts at Polk Center

In an innovative approach to community engagement, the Oak Lawn Library has initiated a Library Hour at the Polk Recreation Center, catering to children in an after-school program with a mix of fun and learning activities. This initiative has quickly become a favorite among the young attendees.

Situated in Northwest Dallas, this bi-weekly program attracts 20 to 45 children, ranging from kindergarten to sixth grade, every other Tuesday. The activities offered include games, crafts, and social interactions, providing a platform for children to nurture creativity and make new friends in an enjoyable setting.

“Each visit is a little different depending on what we bring,” explained Jillian Zinkie, the library public service specialist leading the program. “We try to keep things creative and flexible so kids can participate at their own pace and socialize with their friends.”

Past sessions have included an array of activities such as beading, painting, and various paper crafts. One of the highlights was the Flight Lab, where children learned to fold and design six types of paper planes and tested them in action.

According to Zinkie, “The kids are always curious about what we’ll bring each time, and they’re usually excited to see us when we arrive.” The program has become an integral part of the children’s after-school schedule, consistently attracting the same participants.

The library staff highlights that this program has been instrumental in connecting with children who might not typically visit the library. It also fosters relationships with local families and staff at the recreation center.

“This is the beauty behind libraries and other city departments working together,” noted Manya Shorr, director of libraries for Dallas Public Library. “It’s about meeting people where they are and building connections.”
