University of Virginia’s Fundraising Campaign Hits Major Milestone
The University of Virginia (UVA) has reached a significant milestone in its “Honor the Future” campaign, achieving its goal of 250,000 individual donors. This accomplishment is a testament to the strong support from the UVA community.
President Jim Ryan emphasized the importance of this milestone, stating, “This milestone is particularly meaningful since it represents the UVA community’s belief in the future of the University.” The campaign aims to enhance various facets of the university, including scholarships, faculty research, and medical discoveries, thereby strengthening the global community and alumni network.
Officially launched in 2019 in line with UVA’s bicentennial celebrations, the campaign has set records as the largest in the university’s history. By December 2023, it surpassed the $5 billion mark, well ahead of the original deadline of June 30, 2025.
Key Achievements of the Campaign
- Over 120,000 alumni contributed during the campaign.
- More than 139,000 donors made their initial contributions to UVA.
- Donations were received from all 50 states, four U.S. territories, and 111 countries.
Notably, the majority of contributions were modest, with 97% of gifts under $10,000 and 94% under $5,000.
Mark Luellen, UVA’s vice president for advancement, highlighted the significance of the achievement, considering the university’s alumni base of approximately 275,000 living members. He expressed gratitude, stating, “Our success would not have been possible without the generosity and support of so many of our alumni and friends. I will be forever grateful for the commitment they have shown to helping us meet this goal and support the goals of the University’s 2030 Strategic Plan.”
