North Carolina Awards $13.7M for Housing and Community Projects

North Carolina Allocates Over $13.7 Million for Community Development

In a significant boost to community development, North Carolina has allocated more than $13.7 million in grants to 13 local governments. Governor Josh Stein, alongside the North Carolina Department of Commerce, revealed that these funds will target projects in housing, infrastructure, and community improvements, aiming to benefit low- and moderate-income residents.

“North Carolinians need safe housing, reliable infrastructure, and places to enjoy,” remarked Governor Stein. “These grants will help local governments address these critical needs, strengthen neighborhoods and local economies, and improve quality of life for North Carolinians across our state.”

The funding is sourced from the Community Development Block Grant – Neighborhood Revitalization (CDBG-NR) program, a federally funded initiative. This program empowers eligible municipalities and counties to customize development projects according to their most pressing community needs. It offers investments in areas like housing rehabilitation, infrastructure, and public facilities to enhance the living conditions of residents with low and moderate incomes.

“CDBG-NR funding provides local leaders with the resources they need to invest in housing, infrastructure, and public facilities that support long-term prosperity,” stated North Carolina Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley. “These investments will help communities address local priorities, strengthen neighborhoods, and create new opportunities for economic growth.”

These grants align with North Carolina’s First in Opportunity Strategic Economic Development Plan, which emphasizes strengthening communities and expanding housing opportunities. Additionally, they support Governor Stein’s Executive Order No. 36, focusing on housing rehabilitation and community improvements to ensure access to safe, affordable housing across the state.

The current funding round involves 13 projects, with awards ranging from $693,773 to $2.5 million, reflecting diverse local priorities from housing reconstruction to infrastructure enhancements.

The CDBG-NR program, administered by North Carolina Commerce’s Rural Economic Development Division, is part of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Since 2017, the program has awarded $175.8 million in grants to enhance community vitality through housing, infrastructure, and economic expansion. At least 70 percent of the grant funds must benefit households with low and moderate incomes.
