University of Arizona Focuses on Enrollment, Finances, and Athletics Success

At a recent Arizona Board of Regents meeting held in Flagstaff, University of Arizona leaders underscored their strategic priorities, including managing enrollment, ensuring financial health, and achieving athletic success.

Despite an anticipated 2.7% drop in total enrollment for the upcoming academic year, which includes the University of Arizona Global Campus, the university expects a rise in graduate student numbers. This aligns with their broader enrollment management strategy and commitment to enhancing research capabilities. Notably, the incoming class is distinguished by higher GPAs than previous cohorts.

“These projections align with our commitment to success for every student and our focus on expanding access to Arizonans, increasing retention and providing successful pathways to graduation with minimal debt and meaningful career opportunities,” remarked Chief Financial Officer John Arnold.

Supporting student success is a priority for the university, with Arizona resident tuition rates remaining unchanged for the third consecutive year. The graduation fee and fees for mental health services have been eliminated to further support accessibility. Additionally, investments are increasing in high-demand fields such as medical education, health professions, and nursing.

Financial Stability

According to Arnold, the university’s financial footing is secure, allowing it to build on recent achievements while fulfilling its land-grant mission. The upcoming budget aims to stabilize college-level finances, showing a minor decrease of less than 1% in net tuition revenue while improving cash reserves from 78 to 84 days.

Athletic Excellence

Financial reports on athletic operations were also shared, highlighting fiscal year 2025 as crucial for Arizona Athletics. R. Ken Coit Director of Athletics Desireé Reed-Francois reflected on the year as a foundation for competitive success.

“We built a strong foundation for competitive success in fiscal year 2025,” Reed-Francois stated. “Guided by our Bear Down Blueprint, we strengthened our financial position, achieved success in competition and the classroom, and deepened our engagement with alumni, donors, fans and communities across Arizona. We are building on that momentum in ways that support our student-athletes, advance the university’s mission and enhance Arizona’s national reputation.”

During its inaugural year in the Big 12 Conference, the university made significant strides, fielding over 500 student-athletes across 22 varsity sports and securing national and conference championships. Standout achievements included four football players drafted into the NFL, three Big 12 Scholar Athlete of the Year Awards, and numerous All-Big 12 and All-American honors.

Reed-Francois also shared that athletics raised a record-setting $46 million through the Wildcat Club in FY 26 and secured over $87.7 million in corporate partnerships, which included ten gifts of $1 million or more.

Research Grants

The Board of Regents approved various research grants, including collaborations among the U of A, NAU, and Arizona State University. These projects aim to study the environmental impact of biosolids, recover minerals from copper mine tailings, improve environmental information dissemination, and enhance wildfire risk management in the Sonoran Desert.

Workforce Alignment

The meeting also featured a presentation on aligning university degree offerings with Arizona’s workforce needs, identifying healthcare and behavioral health as critical areas for investment and partnership. Addressing clinical training capacity remains a challenge in expanding the healthcare workforce.

The U of A is tackling this issue through a pioneering partnership between the College of Medicine – Phoenix and Onvida Health in Yuma. This program, part of the AZ Healthy Tomorrow initiative, aims to expand medical education and address healthcare workforce needs, particularly in rural Arizona. The first cohort of medical students will begin this summer.
