NC Insurance Commissioner Announces Arrest in Fraudulent Check Case

North Carolina Man Faces Multiple Felony Charges in Alleged Fraud Scheme

In a case that highlights the ongoing battle against insurance fraud, North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey has confirmed the arrest of 32-year-old Kadeem Welch-Norton of Raeford. Welch-Norton is facing a series of felony charges, including one count of obtaining property by false pretense, three counts of possession of stolen goods, and three counts of conspiracy.

According to special agents from the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division, Welch-Norton is accused of working with a co-defendant to deposit three stolen and altered checks into his bank account. Among these was a check from Erie Insurance Co., which helped secure a total of $17,973.38 released by Navy Federal Credit Union into Welch-Norton’s account.

Following the issuance of an arrest warrant in February, Welch-Norton turned himself in to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office on June 5. He was subsequently released on a $50,000 unsecured bond and is expected to make his court appearance in Cumberland County District Court on June 24. Notably, the other two individuals involved in the case were apprehended in February and have since been indicted by a grand jury.

Commissioner Causey stresses the financial impact of such fraudulent activities, stating, “Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime. It hits all of us in the pocket through higher premiums.” He urges residents to report any suspicious activities to help maintain lower insurance premiums across the state.
